Annual General Meeting

and BBQ

When: Wednesday, July 19 at 7:00 pm

Where: at the Georgian House, 148 Main Street South, Alexandria. K0C 1A0.

We will review the past year, present the financial statement and elect board members.

The short meeting will be followed by a free BBQ to thank members, volunteers and those interested in the trails. See you there.

Schools and the Friends of the Trails (FGTA)

It is very rewarding to see the local schools making use of the trail system. It tells the volunteers that their work is useful and appreciated. We are always happy to work with teachers and young people in our area. Contact us if you wish to partner with the FGTA.

A shout out and “Thank You” to those listed below.

Glengarry District High School

The 2022 GDHS wood working class, under the direction of their teacher , Ryan Winter, built  a beautiful storage shed for the trails. You will see it at the Lochiel Street West Trail Head. Check out the sign which lists all the community members involved in financing, building and moving the structure.

Laggan Public School

The pupils from Mrs MacLeod’s and Miss Thompson’s class have undertaken a Real-World Learning project involving the trails. The grade 1/2 and 4/5 classes decided to ensure that the trails would be an interesting and educational destination.  They have written a story and composed a song. Both will, hopefully, be shared on our web site and Face Book page.

On Friday, June 23rd they installed a scavenger hunt at the Lochiel St. trailhead. It will encourage walkers to pay attention to their surroundings. Check it out when you go for a walk!

They are also researching 10 local animals to produce story boards for the Tales on the Trails installation. The project will be completed in the fall.

Ecole secondaire catholique Le Relais

Le Relais high school parent council contacted the FGTA board with an idea to design and build a bench. It will be installed soon. We suggest that you take the opportunity to sit and enjoy what Mother Nature has to offer.

St Joseph’s Catholic High School student Mikayla Summers

The current story in the story board holders is Deux fillets de Glengarry/Two Girls from Glengarry. It was written by Laura Peck of Alexandria. The artwork and digitization was done by St Joe’s student Mikayla Summers. We hope you take the opportunity to enjoy their work.

If you are using the red trail you will be familiar with the new lookout at the end of the boardwalk. It provides a gorgeous view of the surrounding marsh and Mill Pond. We hope many walkers and photographers will enjoy our efforts.

Nature on the trails! June

June is the month for lady slippers on the Garry Fen trail. You may also be lucky to spot the tiny but beautiful bloom of the wintergreen plant.

September 17, 2023

The Terry Fox Run will return to the trails on September 17.

Reserve the date!

Great news! For a limited time only Victor Brassard, one of our board members, has promised to provide ½ kilo of cold pressed raw honey to anyone who takes out a membership or renewal. We will provide the details upon receiving your membership

Do you enjoy the Glengarry Trails? Do you have talent to share? Do you have a small amount of spare time available ? Then we need you.

While physical labour is certainly involved in keeping the trails safe and accessible there are also behind the scenes needs to ensure the future of the FGTA system, for example: managing the Face Book page, serving on a communication committee, writing the newsletter, managing the membership list using excel, writing  grant applications, organizing an event i.e. Hallowe’en pumpkin painting, walk with a naturalist, full moon trail walk etc.

And we are looking for board members. We have monthly meetings which are no longer than 1 and ½ hour.

Please call Helena McCuaig  613-347-2573 if you would like to support your local trail system.
